If you follow the creative career of MadeULook by Lex, you know what it's like to witness cosmetic art being taken to another level. Lex's body is her canvas, and there's nothing she can't paint. Her output is consistent, her vibe is authentic, and her artistic versatility seems to know no bounds. No wonder her popularity continues to grow- what with over 2 million YouTube subscribers, over half a million Instagram followers and a brand that has expanded into cosmetic sales and apparel. She's a business woman, a diabetes awareness advocate, and an inspiration to many. Her's is a star that continues to rise.
So we thought it would be best to harken in the Halloween season with some of Lex's signature spooky looks. Many of the characters that you see have tutorials on Lex's YouTube channel, the links for which we've included under each photo.
But what about the girl behind the many characters? If you ask her fans (affectionally referred to as LexBots), they'll tell you Lex is a hilarious, witty, caring, and dynamic force. But we wanted to know a little bit more about her, so Lex graciously gave us a peek into her world as she spoke to us about her inspirations, favorite looks, and her love of all things spooky! Scroll down for the interview.
Q: Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, Lex. First off, what are 3 cosmetic products that you are currently obsessed with?
"3 cosmetic products I'm currently obsessed with are Graftobian's Modeling Wax Sealer (incredible for FX), Make Up For Ever's Aqua XL Pencil Eyeliners, and the MadeULook Night Owl Eyeliner Pen for precision!"
Q: When did you begin experimenting with makeup?
"I began experimenting with makeup around the age of 13. It actually wasn’t until I realized that makeup could be used for more than just basic mascara application that I became interested in it. I quickly learned that it was used in movies and to make monsters. I loved the creative aspect of it. It also helps heal the mind and can make someone feel beautiful (or scary) inside and out."
Q: Which of your own scary makeup creations are your favorite?
"I absolutely adore my Freddy vs. Jason look." (See above). "My favorite creations are ones that I feel I can actually be 'in character' for. It's a lot more fun to 'be' the character, than just to paint it alone! I also loved being the Sock Monkey, which was unintentionally complete nightmare fuel." (See below).
Q: Do you have any talents or hobbies other than body art?
"I have always loved to draw and paint growing up! Give me a canvas, regardless of surface, and I will paint you something! I also love to bake and decorate cupcakes! SCARY CUPCAKES, MWAHAHA."
Q: Favorite Autumn activities?
"I love going to haunted houses. What is actually hilarious is that I get startled pretty easily! I love being on every side of Halloween, as both the scarer and the one being scared! I also absolutely LOVE pumpkin patches, and baking pumpkin seeds."
Q: What is your favorite scary movie?
My all time favorite scary movie is Oculus. I'm also a fan of the SAW series, as well as Nightmare on Elm St. It's so difficult to pick just one favorite, since so many horror movies have different types of fear involved."
Q: Who/what do you plan on being for Halloween this year?
"Because I spend all of September and October creating creatures and characters on YouTube for Halloween, I personally spend Halloween dressed up as a witch, or Old Lady Lex, and pass out candy to the kids! I love seeing what everyone has dressed up as and what they've come up with."
Q: What is your personal motto?
"Creativity is who I am."
"No matter what influences the world around you, always be sure that you are not being influenced or peer pressured, but inspired. There is not one moment in your life that you should feel like you need to be something you're not, look like something you are not, or be someone you are not due to trends or what you see around you. Everyone grows as a person, and everyone will change. Make sure that, as you evolve as a person, you evolve as yourself, not someone else. You will find who you are, and creativity is who I am."
*Drop the proverbial mic!*
We really appreciate that Lex isn't another millennial using the internet to achieve notoriety. Yes, she's showcasing her extraordinary talent, but she also has a positive message- one that illuminates the healing powers of artistic expression and physical transformation, while also emphasizing the importance of self love and authenticity.
